DIY landscape improvement projects are possible, given that you have the right tools and the basic know-how of the procedure. Looking to prune a small tree? Go for it! Planting a tree? Of course, you can! But what about tree removal? Is it possible for an average homeowner to complete such a complex task?

If you want to know the answer, keep reading, and find out if you can handle tree removal on your own.

Is it safe to perform DIY Tree Removal
The general rule of thumb is if the tree removal will necessitate the use of a ladder to reach branches, the task is too risky to DIY.

A lot of things can happen while you are up there with a chainsaw in your hand. You are not only putting your property in danger but your life as well. You can lose your balance and fall off the ladder and get badly hurt in the process.

There are a number of things that you can handle on your own in terms of landscape improvement, but tree removal is not one of them. It is simple, not worth your time and safety due to the many risks it entails.

Is it safe to pull a tree with my truck?
This is something we never recommend you do, especially if the tree is nearby and structures, such as your home. We cannot assume that the tree will fall in your desired direction, which means it can land on your home and cause deadly accidents.

Further, trees are extremely heavy, and most trucks can only tow up to 13,000 pounds. This is beyond the capacity of pulling a 20,000-pound maple tree in your backyard. Even stumps can be too massive for a standard truck to pull. The ropes you use to pull a stump or tree can break and even cause damage to your truck. The potential damage that DIY tree removal is just not worth the money you save on hiring a professional tree removal company.

Can I cut down my own small tree?
If you can remove the tree without having to climb a ladder, go ahead and carry out the task. If you are unsure whether it is safe to perform the job, it is always best to get in touch with a local certified arborist to give assistance.
Once you are ready to complete the task, use these safety guidelines to get the job done right:
  1. Hydrate the ground a day before you plan to carry out tree removal. This will allow for easier digging since the soil is wet and soft.
  2. Get the diameter of the trunk, in inches. Dig 6" deep for every inch so that you can reach the entire root structure. Dig around the tree's roots, given that depth.
  3. Shake the root ball out with the use of leverage. You can transplant the tree if you see that the roots are unharmed. If you plan to dispose of it, use a chainsaw to dismember it. Make sure to use personal protective gear such as goggles and earplugs when you use power tools like the chainsaw.
